Today’s Inauguration

As an Obama supporter and volunteer, I am extremely excited about today’s inauguration. I’m amazed by the number of people already gathered this morning in D.C. I truly believe that this is a positive step for our country, and I hope that this starts to turn things around for us economically and helps us progress as a nation.

New Year’s Resolutions?

With the start of a new year, many people like to make resolutions as to things they would like to change or improve in their life in the coming months. For example, I would like to get on better financial footing by paying off some bills. I would also like to find ways to stay more organized and be creative at the same time. Do you make resolutions or have goals for 2009? If so, what are they, and why are they important to you?

To add to the discussion from the previous post…

As Mrs. Rigss posted in the comments to the “apathy” post below, how can students help create the atmosphere they want to see in a classroom? How can students lead by example so that some students who are choosing not to work and not to be active in their education don’t take advantage of the situation and destroy the learning environment for others? How do those of you who really want to learn and be active participants in the classroom deal with those who continually try to disrupt the situation? I know as a teacher that it’s so frustrating to work very hard to come up with interesting, engaging ideas for lessons and to try to incorporate much individualized work for the students but then have three or four students in every class destroy the process for everyone else. How can this be avoided? Solutions? Suggestions?

apathy

By definition the word apathy means “lack of emotion” or “indifference.” Right before winter break is a great time to see apathetic tendencies emerge in students because many just want to get through exams and get to the break! However, why do so many students at HHS seem apathetic most of the year? Why do so many take little interest in their education or in their own lives? What do you think could be done to improve student engagement in their own learning and make students less indifferent to education? Do you feel apathetic? Discuss in the comments….inquiring minds want to know!
